Stool Eating (Coprophagy)
Some dogs have been known to eat their stool. While there are various reasons for this happening, one reason may be a thiamin or B-vitamin deficiency (Reed and Harrington 1981). It is possible, when the dog food is being made; the heat of the extrusion process destroyed the thiamin. AAFCO notes thiamin destruction due to processing in the AAFCO Dog Food Standards. Other species are known to practice coprophagy to obtain their B-vitamins created by intestinal flora. A second reason for stool eating may be the intestinal flora may be compromised by diet upset or an antibiotic. Fido-Vite contains optimal levels of thiamin and probiotics to replenish the beneficial intestinal flora.
